New in Store

Spring has sprung and summer is right around the corner. Soon we will be readying the museum for the many tourists who pass through our doors in the warm months. However, the preparations in our gift shop are well underway and the shelves are filling up!

Steelx has released a new selection of jewelry! They have expanded on their use of coloured steel and come up with some elegant and funky designs. There is sure to be something for everyone!

There are also new Thomas wooden trains and train sets in store. We have over 70 different Thomas wooden trains – the largest selection in town! If it’s sets you are looking for we have a great selection including Harold’s Search and Rescue along with Up and Around Sodor.

Every month at the Railway Coastal Museum Gift Shop we will be featuring a Steelx piece or pieces of jewellery that have really come down in price. We are happy to be able to do this and offer our customers some beautiful pieces. This month we are offering a set which includes ring, necklace and earrings. This set has a swarovski crystal and looks real smokey. The prices are to die for.

Little Toot Birthday Parties

Our Birthday Parties have started for the year if you have a young child who LOVES trains than this is the place to bring them!

The Little Toot Birthday Parties are available Saturday and Sunday from 11 – 1. Included in the party cost:

• A tour of the train diorama
• A puppet show
• Waking up the model train (train depending)
• Pizza
• Thomas themed Birthday Cake
• Family passes for all children attending
• A Thomas Train table is brought back for the kids to play with
• A T-shirt for the birthday child
• A Little Toot Pass

Its a great deal at just $19.95 + tax per child (must pay for a minimum of ten children)!

 Our friendly staff takes care of the set up and serving of the food. Tables with Thomas place-mats and colouring sheets/crayons are set for the arrival of the family as well as our special Birthday Chair! It is our duty to make the party as enjoyable for parents as it is for the kids. We have a “parents hands off” policy – the staff will take care of all the serving  and clean up. All you need to do is show up and enjoy the day with your child!

Carbonear to St. John’s, 1973: Vintage Newfoundland Railway Film

Regular passenger service in Newfoundland ended in 1969, but freight service continued until the railway was shut down in 1988. Occasionally, however, a mixed train (with passenger cars attached to the freight train) would run.

This film, donated to the Railway Coastal Museum by Mike Smithson, features passengers boarding the train in Carbonear and riding to the station (now the Railway Coastal Museum) in St. John’s. It was recorded in 1973 on super 8mm film by Mr. Smithson, Robert Smithson, and Brian Payton, along with one unknown camera man.
